From “Snapshot: Firefox, IE Vie for Popularity Among College Students,” Campus Technology, 12/10/2007.
Eduventures conducted a study of college students (“18- to 24-year-old students enrolled full-time at a four-year college or university”) to see which browsers colleges students preferred. Surprisingly perhaps to those who don’t teach, Firefox and Microsoft’s IE are tired at a 45% preference rate. Safari, Netscape, and others make up the remaining 10%.

Also interesting, Eduventures found that “31 percent who prefer Explorer also use Firefox, while 65 percent who prefer Firefox also use Explorer” (quote from Campus Technology).
